Lead Your Cruise Vacation To Weight Loss Success

When you ponder of a dream cruise, you might have feared that your best resolutions of eating healthy and exercise regularly would jump ship.

Until recently, this was the case. Now, while enjoying delicious meals is always part of the cruising experience, that is not the definition. A lot of cruise lines provide healthier, low fat dinner options and are also more than willing to accommodate special dietary requests.

While on a cruise, it’s important and easy to focus on the three key areas of a healthy lifestyle: food, body and mind, says Lisa Talamini, RD-Chief Nutritionist and Program Director for Jenny Craig, Inc.

When it comes to food, don’t forget to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, order lean cuts of meat or fish, and try lower-calorie alcohol alternatives like wine spritzers, advises Talamini. For the body, take advantage of the on-board gym, scheduled physical activities and the opportunity to dance the night away. Your mind can be nourished with a special treatment from the ship’s spa, exploring ports of call or relaxing by the pool.

Here are some easy ways to stay in shape while cruising:

  • Take a dip in the swimming pool. You might not be able to swim laps, but walking on water or doing aqua aerobics are both great ways to keep moving and active.
  • During formal dinners, ask for your low fat dressing on the side. Using the drip technique, dip your fork in the dressing, so that you have just a little bit with each bite.
  • At a buffet, examine the table and decide what to have before you line up. Wait for the line to thin out, so only take what you planned. And only one trip.
  • Lighten your spirits. Instead of a more calorie-dense cocktail, sip a glass of sparkling water, a champagne spritzer, or a virgin Cosmopolitan.
  • Take a walk on the deck after each meal. Breathe in the fresh air, chat with your travel companion and give your meal a well-deserved chance to digest.
  • Die for dessert. Order a single serving of sorbet or something made from fruit and share it with your table.
  • Make a selection of shore excursions involving physical activity. Hiking, golfing, snorkeling, and biking around the island are fun, as well as a great workout.
